Job Description:
Our client, a renewable energy provider, a Technical Director who will be responsible for leading three of the technical departments of the company: Design, Construction, and Metering. The incumbent will be for each department and will provide end to end strategic and tactical leadership for the technical solutions that the company delivers to our clients. Furthermore, the incumbent will report to the CEO.
Responsibilities:
- Manage high-level internal and external stakeholders while overseeing the development of construction-ready designs for MW-scale generation and distribution infrastructure.
- Contribute substantively to the development of world class metro-grid feasibility studies for urban and peri-urban distribution networks.
- Coordinate technical communications to company’s Board, existing and prospective investors, and third-party technical consultants.
- Enhance company’s existing demand estimation tools and strategies while comparing projections with reality and ensuring ongoing communication of empirically tested data with the Executive Team.
- Audit company drawing templates and actively maintain and advance the design standards for company’s engineering documentation to meet and exceed international best practices.
- Implement a process to review & update generation and distribution technologies on existing assets.
- Mentor Design team and build both technical and managerial competencies among key team members.
- Design process management and integrated engineering and financial modelling to ensure robust interface with simulation, modelling, and budgeting decisions across multiple software platforms and reporting mechanisms.
- Based on validated designs: Help manage and supervise the RFP/tendering process for the EPC contracting per site.
- Ensure construction management best practices (including world class safety protocols), and ensure construction timelines and work plans executed with world class precision.
- Contribute to and exhibit the aspects required in a safe working environment.
- Strong knowledge and commitment to environmental and social standards as well as serious commitment to the promotion of diversity and inclusion within contractor selection and project teams.
- Beat cost and timing targets for new infrastructure deployments.
- Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to logistical considerations including import and supply chain complexities.
- Continue to develop monitoring systems to maintain real-time oversight of technologies including strong, consistent engagement with company’s backend data systems.
- Help shape company’s general technical approach to hardware strategy and deployment and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant new tech (generation, conversion, storage technologies, metering, etc) and potential applications on company assets.
- Supervise the metering teams both installing hardware and running the back-end integrations (core supervision of back-end by data/IT team, not Technical Director).
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Extensive professional experience in electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering.
- Postgraduate technical degree or equivalent, with preference given for a Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or international equivalent.
- First Aid/CPR training (or willingness to achieve certifications).
- Demonstrated experience working in a technical / engineering capacity at utilities in emerging markets, with preference given for a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Thorough understanding of European electrical codes and standards (e.g. IEC standards).
- Experience leading the developing and delivery of technical feasibility studies to financial and technical institutions.
- Demonstrated experience in solar mini-grid development and other energy systems deployment with technical competencies i.e. SCADA Systems, PVsyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD etc.
- Written and spoken fluency in English with fluency in French and / or Swahili strongly preferred.
