Shell Nigeria to Invest in gas project in Niger Delta

Shell Nigeria, the largest oil producer in Nigeria, has concluded plans to develop a new gas project in the southern Niger Delta energy hub [Source]. Nigeria has the world’s 9th largest proven gas reserves (187 trillion cubic feet).

According to the Country Chair and MD of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, Mr Osagie Okunbor, Shell is on the verge of making a final investment decision on a project in the city of Asa that would have a capacity of 300Mmcf of natural gas per day.

Okunbor also told journalists that Shell would be putting more emphasis on gas whilst reducing the key oil portion of its footprint in Nigeria.

This comes amid long-standing battles with thieves and racketeers. Last year alone, Shell Nigeria lost around 5 660 barrels of oil per day – and far more in previous years. Criminals access the company’s vast network of pipes and sells the oil they steal on the oil & gas black markets. [Source]
